Itinerary

DAY 01: Arrival via the Blue Lagoon (Meals on Board)

Guests are met at Keflavík airport by their guide. The Blue Lagoon is on the Reykjanes Peninsula, not too far from the Keflavík Airport. It is a unique experience; a lagoon with pleasantly warm mineral-rich geothermal water in a middle of a black lava field. The high natural levels of silica and minerals give the Lagoon its rich blue colour. The facilities include modern changing rooms and showers, an indoor geothermal pool, sauna, steam bath, masseuses, restaurants and other services. A visit to the Blue Lagoon is invigorating whether one bathes there surrounded by snow in the middle of the winter or in the long summer daylight. Lunch will be served at local restaurant. We drive to Reykjavik, check in the hotel. Free for rest until dinner. Evening dinner transfer by private coach only, dinner at local restaurant (Viking village with Viking dinner menu). Overnight at hotel in Reykjavik, Grand Hotel Reykjavik or similar.

DAY 02: Reykjavík – Borgarfjörður – Akureyri  (Lunch/Dinner)

Departure from Reykjavik to the spectacular waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. We drive through the fertile Borgarfjörður region and visit Reykholt, home of the eminent 13th century scholar, politician and writer of sagas, Snorri Sturluson. Last stop of the day at Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. Onwards to Akureyri, the capital of the North. Brief sightseeing tour of the town before checking in at our accommodation. Lunch will be served at local restaurant. Dinner and overnight stay in Akureyri. Icelandair hotels Akureyri or similar.

DAY 03: Akureyri – Mývatn (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

In the morning we head along the shores of Eyjafjörður fjord to the impressive Goðafoss waterfall. Onwards to Lake Mývatn a paradise for birdwatchers, geologists and other nature enthusiasts. The day’s discoveries include the pseudo-craters at Skútustaðir, the curious lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the ringwall crater of Hverfjall, the central volcano Krafla, scene of a series of volcanic eruptions in the 1970’s and 80’s and the geothermal field at Námaskarð with its bubbling mud pools and multicoloured solfataras. In the end of the day you will enjoy dipping into the warm hot spring at Myvatn nature bath. Lunch will be served at local restaurant en route. Dinner and overnight stay in Myvatn area, such as Fosshotel Myvatn or similar.

DAY 04: Mývatn – Dettifoss – Egilsstaðir - Breiðdalsvík (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Departure for Dettifoss, Europe’s mightiest waterfall, before we continue eastward over the barren and now unpopulated plateau of Jökuldalsheiði into the fertile Fljótsdalur district. Continue our drive along the rugged and varied coastline of the East Fjords, some now deserted and each a world of its own. Lunch will be served at local restaurant en route. Dinner and overnight stay in Breiðdalsvík area or surrondings, such as Hotel Bláfell or similar.

DAY 05: Breiðdalsvík – Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell – Vík (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

We have the magnificent Vatnajökull glacier the largest in Europe as backdrop today as we explore the wonders of the Southeast. We pass several outlet glaciers on our way to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where huge icebergs float and grind together in the still, deep waters of the lagoon. (Boat tour quoted separately). We continue to Skaftafell national park, a beautiful green oasis beneath towering Öræfajökull, the highest peak in Iceland. Proceed across Skeiðarársandur with its vast stretches of black sand formed by mighty glacial rivers. We stop for a visit to the church at Núpsstaður, the oldest turf church in the country, before arriving in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, former site of a 12th century catholic convent. Across the enormous Eldhraun lava field and the black desert sands of Mýrdalssandur before we arrive in Vík, the southernmost village of Iceland. Lunch will be served at local restaurant en route. Dinner and overnight stay in Vík area or surroundings, such as Hotel Katla by KEA Hotels.

DAY 06: Vík – Golden circle - Reykjavík (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

Morning departure for the breathtaking black beach at Reynishverfi or the promontory Dyrhólaey, a nature reserve and home to thousands of seabirds (closed during the nesting period until June 25th). We stop at the waterfall Skógafoss with Mýrdalsjökull glacier towering above and Seljalandsfoss before continuing to Selfoss area. We visit Þingvellir, a remarkable geological site and a historic site as well.
